While Thomas Jefferson\, George Washington and Patrick Henry fought for independence\, Gabriel grew up witnessing the promises of liberty denied to over 300\,000 enslaved Black Virginians. His plot hinged on the successful capture of then-Governor James Monroe for the purpose of negotiating an end to slavery.
