DESCRIPTION:On July 4th\, Highland will host the Heifetz International Music Institute for a free concert from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and free grounds access throughout the day. A classically-inspired ensemble from Heifetz will bring a uniquely innovative and expressive concert that will appeal to all ages. Visitors can enjoy family games and activities from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Access to grounds is FREE ALL DAY on Independence Day. \nFourth of July picnics are welcome at our fifth president’s home. Language Center and the International School of Charlottesville\, is excited to announce On the Farm with Mr. Monroe! This French and Spanish immersion camp for children ages 4-10 will be held Monday through Friday\, July 9-13\, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. \nThe camp will focus on the French and Spanish languages and forge the connection between France\, Spain\, and the legacy of James Monroe. The camp will include daily language lessons\, private tours of the house and gardens with scavenger hunts\, afternoon historic crafts on the property\, period parlor games\, nature walks\, and stories. \nThis is the first of four summer 2018 French and Spanish language immersion camps. DESCRIPTION:EVENT FULL!\nThe July tree walk with the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards has been rescheduled for Monday\, July 9\, from 9 – 10:30 a.m. Participants will learn more about Highland’s trees during this free 90-minute walk at James Monroe’s historic property. Highland’s open spaces afford vistas of mature ash\, black walnut\, maples\, oaks\, and other native trees. You will also see a hemlock and towering white oak that date to Monroe’s time! Learn how to identify trees in the summer using leaves\, bark\, twigs\, form\, and many other features\, as well as how Highland trees and tree-ring dating have contributed to historical interpretation.

James Monroe’s Highland\, in partnership with The Front Porch\, will host the 4th annual Tuesday Tunes\, a three-part series of summertime evening concerts at the home of President James Monroe. These performances are a perfect opportunity to bring the family out with blanket and chairs to enjoy music from Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region! \nThe second Tuesday Tunes of the season will take place on July 10\, from 6 to 9 p.m.\, and will feature George Guthrie’s group\, Meadow Mountain! \nLocal food and beverage vendors will be on-site. Guests are encouraged to buy or pack a picnic and experience the beauty of James Monroe’s Highland at dusk. While alcohol will be available for purchase at Tuesday Tunes\, guests are asked to leave their own alcoholic beverages at home. \n\n\n\nAbout Meadow Mountain\n\nMeadow Mountain started as a group of friends busking on the corner of the Vail farmers market\, and it wasn’t long before they were playing gigs around Vail and Summit counties. They formed initially over a love of traditional and progressive bluegrass music. The band has given a TED talk\, hosted Denver’s only performance jam\, and won the prestigious Rockygrass band competition. Other notable achievements include 1st place at the 2017 Ullrgrass band competition\, 3rd place at the 2017 Telluride bluegrass competition\, and opening for The Del McCoury Band.
