Neglected History: Lives of Enslaved Laborers on the Monticello, Montpelier and Highland Plantations

June 17, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us on Thursday, June 17, from 7:00 – 8:30pm for Neglected History: Lives of Enslaved Laborers on the Monticello, Montpelier and Highland Plantations. Hosted by The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, this virtual panel discussion will focus on the lives of the enslaved laborers who lived and worked at Monticello, Montpelier, and Highland. Experts from these presidential plantations, including Highland executive director Sara Bon-Harper, will speak about what life was like for the field workers, blacksmiths, carpenters, and house workers, who kept these plantations running while living within a dehumanizing and brutal system. Their perspectives and stories present a more complete American history,  and highlight the lives of those who have been long relegated to obscurity.  The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Justene Hill Edwards, a UVA professor whose research focuses on the history of slavery in the United States.
